rLung

rLung (Tib.) is the Tibetan term for spatial wind — the subtle energy-current. Sanskrit equivalent: prāṇa.

Key Points

  • Sanskrit equivalent: prāṇa (breath / vital force / subtle-body current).
  • rLung-gom (rLung sGom) = meditation that focuses on rLung. Given by Roaring Silence as an example of the specific naming that Tibetan uses in place of the generic “meditation” (see Gom).
  • Not elaborated in Ch.1. rLung is mentioned only as an example; the content of rLung-gom, the details of the subtle-body system, and rLung’s role in Tantric yoga are not taken up by this chapter. These typically belong to the Tantric curriculum proper.

Context in Roaring Silence

The reference is typological, not practical: the authors invoke rLung-gom to make the point that one has to name the specific kind of gom under discussion. The book’s own method (Four Naljors) does not center on rLung-based practices, which are more characteristic of Tantric yogas (e.g. tsa-lung, tummo).
