Five Strategies for the Pain of Desolation

The Five Strategies for the Pain of Desolation is Spectrum of Ecstasy Ch.10’s space-neurotic diagnostic framework — a catalogue of five dualistic strategies for manipulating the pain of desolation “so that it provides the illusion of solid ground.” Each strategy is mapped to one of the five elements.

The Ch.10 Definition

“There are five dualistic strategies for manipulating the pain of desolation, so that it provides the illusion of solid ground. These are related to the five distorted fields of energy. The first strategy is freezing. Freezing is connected to the distorted energy field of water. The second is consolidating, which connects to earth. The third is fantasising, which relates to fire. The fourth is anticipating, which relates to air. The fifth is obliterating, which is the fundamental strategy for attempting to convert pain into ‘reliability’ — and this connects with space. Of these five the three most fundamental are fantasising, freezing and obliterating. This is because these three are linked directly to the three distracted tendencies: attraction, aversion, and indifference.”

The Five-Strategy Table

StrategyElementThree-Poison LinkPrimary or SecondarySignature
FantasisingFireAttractionPrimary”I hurt therefore I am” — pain as identity-substantiator
FreezingWaterAversionPrimaryIce-cold rigidity; resignation-as-frozen-anger
ObliteratingSpaceIndifferencePrimaryDistraction → soporific; eventual oblivion-seeking
ConsolidatingEarth(Secondary)SecondaryEmotional armour; despising-those-who-break-down
AnticipatingAir(Secondary)SecondaryFear-in-advance; projected-territory-loss

Three primary because they directly map the three poisons. Two secondary because they are refinements/escalations rather than directly-poison-mapped operations.

Fantasising (Fire / Attraction)

“Fantasising, as a strategy for dealing with the pain of desolation, is one in which we cling to pain because of the conviction that it is all that remains as territory. We become masochistic vampires feeding on the energy of our own pain. We nurture it with skill and devious dexterity. Intensity often leads to obsession, and obsession has a certain quality of single-mindedness — neurosis is always dynamically connected with enlightened nature.”

The mechanism: the space-neurotic in fantasising-mode grasps the pain as territory — the pain becomes the one remaining ground when all else has collapsed. This is attraction (grasping-toward) operating at the space-level, where what is grasped is the pain itself.

The Othello-register vignette (the deserted lover’s imaginative elaboration):

  • Imagine the ex-partner in previously-shared places
  • Imagine them enjoying themselves as you used to
  • Imagine your gifts being thrown away
  • Imagine cruel jokes about you being made
  • Imagine confidences being revealed for amusement
  • “You might even roll around on the floor clutching at yourself, actually revelling in the picture of the pitiable spectacle you must appear”
  • Escalation: “the imaginary scene could continue to worsen — it could become sexually explicit to the limit of your imagination — and you would both love and loathe what you were doing to yourself”
  • “Having imagined things to be as bad as they possibly could be, it might occur to you, that with a beautifully subtle twist the story could be worse still”

The compressed formula: “I hurt therefore I am.” This is the second of the book’s Descartes-pastiches. Ch.8 installed “I enjoy, therefore I enjoy” (vs “I enjoy, therefore I am”) as the fire-element referentiality/nonreferentiality distinction; Ch.10 installs the parallel space-level formula where pain-substantiates-existence.

The connection to fire-element proper: fantasising-at-the-space-level uses the fire-element’s attraction operation, but applied to pain rather than to pleasure. The fire-element neurotic (see Spectrum of Ecstasy - 13 Ch.8 Red Khandro-Pawo Display) grasps pleasure-objects; the space-neurotic-in-fantasising-mode grasps pain-imaginings. Same attraction-operation, different content.

Freezing (Water / Aversion)

“Freezing as a process of dealing with pain is one in which the space element neurotic becomes as hard and as cold as ice. Feeling vanishes altogether and you ‘get on with life’.”

The mechanism: the space-neurotic in freezing-mode pushes the pain away through emotional-numbing. This is aversion (pushing-away) operating at the space-level, where what is pushed away is the full affective-register.

Resignation as frozen anger — the critical diagnostic:

“Resignation is socially acceptable, and that supports this frozen position. Resignation, though a seemingly admirable stance, is a form of anger which imbues a person with a false sense of dignity. It is another way of establishing a concretised existence, through displaying that one can live without emotions.”

The distinguishing feature: resignation appears dignified (stoicism, composure, “mature acceptance”), but structurally it is frozen anger — the aversion-operation performed with such force that the resulting rigidity is mistaken for peace.

The vignette of freezing:

  • “You bustle about your home making sure everything is immaculate”
  • “Time is spent engaged in organisational procedures, which are carried out alone in order that it is not necessary to smile at anyone”
  • “Your face locks into a frost-bitten mask of expressionlessness; or, develops an eerie fixed smile that betokens merely the pretence of gaiety”
  • “You may appear to have regained your characteristic emotional state, but all exhibited signs of normality are a charade”
  • Even new relationships cannot penetrate: “if it is unable to melt the permafrost of your defences, the other person will be emotionally frozen out”

The connection to water-element proper: freezing-at-the-space-level uses the water-element’s aversion operation, but applied to the affective field as a whole rather than to specific threats. The water-element neurotic (see Spectrum of Ecstasy - 12 Ch.7 White Khandro-Pawo Display) responds to perceived-threat with hot anger or cold-rage; the space-neurotic-in-freezing-mode responds to the pain-of-desolation with all-encompassing freeze. Same aversion-operation, wider target.

Obliterating (Space / Indifference)

“Obliteration as a process of dealing with the pain of desolation is one in which distraction becomes soporific and the pretence that the lover has never really left can establish itself. One can have conversations with an ‘invisible partner’ — or write letters to a partner who has simply gone away on a long trip.”

The mechanism: the space-neurotic in obliterating-mode ignores the pain through continuous-activity-generation. This is indifference (ignoring) operating at the space-level — but not the simple-indifference of the earth-neurotic (indifference-to-others’-discomfort). It is indifference-to-one’s-own-pain through deliberate-distraction.

The distraction-catalogue:

  • “You might go to evening classes and learn a language”
  • “You might do a mechanics course and try to get your car back on the road”
  • “You might take up painting water-colours”
  • “You keep your diary well-scheduled with events that distract you”
  • “Most people imagine that you are coping quite well; until you fall into heavy alcohol abuse, and end up keeping someone up all night weeping on their shoulder”

The final-failure mode: when distraction-generation fatigues, “shelter in oblivion”“you get drunk; go to sleep; commit suicide; join a pottery class — anything as a means of escaping what you see as the brutal reality of your situation.” The list juxtaposes suicide and pottery-class to make the structural-point: both are oblivion-strategies; the content-difference does not matter for the operation.

The primary-space-neurosis connection: obliterating is the native strategy of space-neurosis — the other four are adaptations. Obliterating is the direct expression of oblivious-torpor / indifference / the primary space-neurosis. The space-neurotic who is not using one of the other four strategies is obliterating by default.

Consolidation (Earth, Secondary)

“Consolidation as a process of dealing with the pain of desolation is one in which a sense of success becomes apparent — emotion has frozen to such a degree that it becomes an inert insensate crust.”

The mechanism: consolidation is freezing advanced to armour. Where freezing holds off pain, consolidation claims victory over pain — the practitioner feels they have overcome emotion rather than merely frozen it.

The vignette:

  • “One feels one has subdued feeling altogether; endured terrible disaster; withstood hideous emotional injuries”
  • “It seems like a great accomplishment, and this encourages a tendency to stiffen into morbid stolidness”
  • “Freezing enables you to avoid breaking down; but with the strategy of consolidation, the possibility of breaking down is no longer even available”
  • “An emotional suit of armour which provides the illusion of invulnerability at the expense of sensitivity”
  • The hallmark: “It becomes possible to enjoy despising others who break down, because they appear not to have such an advanced degree of emotional atrophication”

The connection to earth-element proper: consolidation-at-the-space-level uses the earth-element’s possessive-solidifying operation, but applied to the frozen-affect itself — the frozen-state is possessed as success. The earth-element neurotic (see Spectrum of Ecstasy - 11 Ch.6 Yellow Khandro-Pawo Display) solidifies territory-as-identity; the space-neurotic-in-consolidation-mode solidifies frozen-invulnerability-as-identity. Same solidification-operation, internalised target.

Secondary-status: consolidation is secondary because it is a refinement of freezing (not a separate primary-strategy). It adds the triumphalism-of-having-succeeded-at-freezing to the freezing itself.

Anticipation (Air, Secondary)

“Anticipation as a process of dealing with the pain of desolation is one in which the space neurotic fears the worst in advance, living in dread of what might happen.”

The mechanism: anticipation is fear-projection-forward — the space-neurotic manages current-pain by projecting future-pain. This prevents the current-pain from being experienced-as-present (it becomes background-to-the-forward-fear) without requiring the full freeze or distraction.

The territory-distinction from earth and fire (Ch.10’s explicit comparison):

“Territory, as the term is being employed here, does not have the possessive quality of the earth element. For the space neurotic in the anticipatory mode, territory is not regarded as a possession; but as an indispensable sign of being. For the space neurotic, the idea of extended territory does not have the consuming quality of the fire element — here, it is more the idea of annexing experientially safe areas. These areas are then seen as secure stepping-stones in the raging river of space.”

The compound nature:

  • Earth-territoriality = possession-of-land-and-goods
  • Fire-territoriality = consumption-of-pleasure-objects
  • Air-territoriality = surveillance-of-apparent-territory
  • Space-anticipatory-territory = “a terrified, white-knuckled grip onto any kind of security” — safe-areas as signs of being, not as possessions

The amputation image: when the other-who-had-become-part-of-one leaves, “it feels like an amputation: legs and arms suddenly end at the knees and elbows.”

The connection to air-element proper: anticipation-at-the-space-level uses the air-element’s surveillance-and-projection operation, but applied to projected-future-pain rather than to current-territory-threat. The air-element neurotic (see Spectrum of Ecstasy - 14 Ch.9 Green Khandro-Pawo Display) surveys current-territory; the space-neurotic-in-anticipation-mode projects future-loss. Same surveillance-operation, future-tense-target.

Secondary-status: anticipation is secondary because it is a refinement of obliterating (not a separate primary-strategy). It adds the fear-projection-forward to the indifference-to-present-pain.

The Three-Primary / Two-Secondary Structure

The structural-significance of the three-primary/two-secondary split:

Three primary strategies directly map the three poisons:

  • FantasisingAttraction — grasp-toward (grasp pain as territory)
  • FreezingAversion — push-away (push affect out of range)
  • ObliteratingIndifference — ignore (generate distraction until pain is invisible)

Two secondary strategies are compound/advanced forms:

  • Consolidation = Freezing + earth-solidification (frozen-state possessed as success)
  • Anticipation = Obliterating + air-surveillance (future-projected-pain as current-pain’s cover)

This structure explains why the five strategies are not simply five-parallel-options: three are direct-three-poison-expressions, two are compound-formations. The space-neurotic who has access to consolidation and anticipation has refined the three-primary-strategies rather than adding genuinely-new operations.

The Framework’s Structural Significance

The Five Strategies framework re-maps the entire Part Two material as available-strategies at the space-level. Two structural consequences:

1. Space-neurosis is ground-neurosis precisely because it has access to all five element-modes as pain-management tools. Earth-neurotic, water-neurotic, fire-neurotic, and air-neurotic (each identified with one element as primary mode) operate from within a specific element-identification. The space-neurotic has no specific element-identification and therefore can deploy any of the five as tactical-operation.

2. The other four element-neuroses (as primary-modes) can be read as “the space-neurotic who has collapsed into one element-strategy as identity.” An earth-neurotic (primary-mode) is a space-neurotic who has collapsed into consolidation; a water-neurotic is one who has collapsed into freezing; a fire-neurotic is one who has collapsed into fantasising; an air-neurotic is one who has collapsed into anticipation. The space-neurotic proper has not collapsed into any — hence the direct contact with bewilderment and oblivious-torpor (see Bewilderment).

This is the ground-engine structure (Bewilderment) read from the operational side. Full resolution of any element-neurosis requires reaching the space-level resolution (dharmadhātu wisdom ground-recognition); partial-resolution of an element-neurosis leaves the space-level intact, potentially shifting to another element-mode.

The Counter-Move — Release the Gyroscopic Mechanism

Ch.10’s practice-gesture applies to all five strategies (since they are all expressions of the gyroscopic-thought-cycle):

“The process of artificially maintaining and intensifying emotional pain with thought is a gyroscopic perceptual mechanism. If we keep a cycle of thought constantly spinning, we generate a ‘charge’, that actively prevents it from dissolving into its own free dimension. But without conceptualisation, emotional pain becomes pure sensation. When it is experienced as pure sensation it is released to dance in the vastness of the open dimension of experience.”

The practice: notice the specific strategy being run (is it fantasising, freezing, consolidating, anticipating, obliterating?), withdraw the conceptualisation sustaining it, allow the pain to become pure sensation. The pain dissolves into the dharmadhātu — the open dimension of experience.

See Dharmadhatu Wisdom for the wisdom-register treatment; Bewilderment for the engine-register; Shi-nè for the prerequisite practice.

Relation to the Opening’s Five Failed Strategies

SoE Opening supplied a different “five strategies” — the five failed emotional strategies for avoiding direct emotional experience: tyranny of will, tepid safety, will-powered athleticism, rising above, abandonment to intensity. See Embracing Emotions as the Path.

These are different frameworks:

  • Opening’s five — strategies for avoiding emotional engagement as such (at the pre-engagement level); the alternatives to the whole book’s methodology.
  • Ch.10’s five — strategies the space-neurotic uses for managing pain-of-desolation already-engaged; sub-patterns within the neurotic-field that the book’s methodology directly addresses.

The Opening’s five are about whether to engage; Ch.10’s five are about how to mismanage engagement when it has already happened. Both frameworks are diagnostic; they operate at different levels.
