All-Accomplishing Wisdom

The all-accomplishing wisdom (Tib. bya grub ye shes, Skt. kṛtyānuṣṭhāna-jñāna) is the air-element wisdom in the five-fold Vajrayana scheme — the nondual face of the same energy whose dualistic face is paranoia / jealousy / territorial vigilance and the fear of obliteration. Spectrum of Ecstasy Ch.9 is the handbook’s dedicated exposition; the chapter names it “the wisdom of self-fulfilling activity.”

The Ch.9 Definition

“The wisdom of self-fulfilling activity is free of all hindrances. We can pacify what needs to be pacified. We can enrich what needs to be enriched. We can magnetise what needs to be magnetised. We can destroy what needs to be destroyed. Our activities are self-accomplished; their completion is implicit in their inception.”

Two load-bearing claims:

  • “Free of all hindrances” — the wisdom’s signature is its unobstructed operation, not the absence of external obstacles but the absence of the internal-dualistic-apparatus that produces the sense of obstruction.
  • “Their completion is implicit in their inception” — activity begun in the inception-moment already contains its completion; there is no gap between intention and fulfilment that requires continued-willed-effort to close.

The Wisdom and the Neurosis as Same Energy

“According to the dualistic vision of the air element, experience of our spacious nature is perceived as groundless anxiety… According to the non-dual vision of the air element, experiences of our spacious nature are discovered in their natural condition as the energy of self-accomplishing activity.”

Dualistic readNondual read
Groundless anxiety → panic → paranoiaSpaciousness → self-accomplishing activity
Generates territorial-vigilance, strategy, espionageGenerates direct, unhindered, self-fulfilling activity
Whirlwind chasing its tail (recursive self-checking)Lightning reaching the ground (direct action)
Energy spent in surveillance and maintenanceEnergy unleashed as “the power of dynamic potential”

This is the embracing-emotions-as-path structure at the air-element level: the same energy is both the poison and the wisdom.

The Four Buddha-Karmas (Le-shi)

The operational mode of all-accomplishing wisdom is the four Buddha-karmas (Ch.9 footnote 1: “Le-shi, or the four Buddha-karmas: enriching, pacifying, magnetising, destroying”):

  1. Pacify (shi-wa, zhi ba) — quieten what is agitated; calm what is disturbed; bring what is reactive into rest
  2. Enrich (gye-wa, rgyas pa) — increase what is beneficial; nourish capacity; cause to flourish
  3. Magnetise (wang-gyur, dbang) — draw together what needs gathering; attract; bring into one’s sphere
  4. Destroy (drag-po, drag po) — cut through what obstructs; remove what is harmful; terminate what must end

These are the four classical wisdom-activities in Vajrayana. They appear in sadhana texts as the four-activity-mantras, the four-activity-colours (white/pacifying; yellow/enriching; red/magnetising; blue/black/destroying), the four-activity ritual implements, and the four-activity visualisations. Ch.9 foregrounds them as the energetic structure of all-accomplishing wisdom — not four separate activities the practitioner chooses among, but the fourfold register in which self-accomplishing activity manifests according to situational-necessity.

Completion Implicit in Inception

The chapter’s most technically precise formulation of self-accomplishment:

“Our actions fulfil themselves, because we do not embark on projects founded on the viewpoint of duality. Our activities are self-accomplishing; their completion is inherent in their inception — begun in their beginning.”

The dualistic action-structure (what self-accomplishing activity is not):

  • Inception: a goal set against present-state; duration of effort; possibility of failure; completion contingent on conditions.
  • Activity: the gap-closing-process between intention and outcome.
  • Completion: an outcome that might not materialise; the anxiety of non-completion drives continued effort.

The self-accomplishing action-structure (what the wisdom-activity is):

  • Inception: arising of activity from the spaciousness that also is its completion.
  • Activity: manifestation-unfolding, not gap-closing.
  • Completion: already present at inception; the activity is the visible form of a completion that does not depend on conditions.

This is not magical-thinking. It is the structural consequence of non-dualistic motivation: action that does not set goal-against-present is action that is not trying to produce a non-present outcome. The activity is the outcome in process of becoming manifest.

Non-Ordinary Readability

Ch.9 is explicit that self-accomplishing activity is not readable from conventional perspective:

“These activities are not always easily understood from the conditioned, or conventional perspective. In terms of enlightened activity, a Lama could destroy cherished beliefs which ostensibly gave us inspiration. The Lama could enrich a quality in us that we felt was irrelevant to our spiritual growth. But this is not an ordinary perspective. It can only be comprehended from the view based on the realisation of intrinsic space. All activity that springs from this view is present, direct and self-fulfilling.”

Structural implication: a Lama’s activity read through the disciple’s conventional-categorisation will routinely appear as destruction-of-what-should-be-enriched, enrichment-of-what-should-be-destroyed, pacifying-what-should-be-magnetised, and so on. The disciple’s conventional-reading is the form-quality-demand in operation; what the disciple cannot predict is the Lama’s activity precisely because the Lama is not operating through the disciple’s reference-point-maintenance system.

See the crazy-wisdom vignettes at Dorje Trollo — Drukpa Kunlegs, Kunzang Dorje Rinpoche, Milarepa — which all illustrate this non-ordinary-readability at the level of lineage-transmission.

The Thunderbolt-Sword Structural Match

The iconographic symbol — thunderbolt sword (Thunderbolt Sword) — is the wisdom’s operational mode:

  • Lightning does not waver ↔ all-accomplishing wisdom does not deliberate between alternatives within a dualistic problem-space
  • Lightning does not weigh pros and cons ↔ self-accomplishing activity does not run the cost-benefit machinery of conditional-action
  • Lightning does not hesitate ↔ inception and activation are one movement, not two
  • Lightning moves with complete purpose ↔ completion is implicit in inception
  • Lightning charges the air with electricity ↔ the activity transforms the space it passes through

See Thunderbolt Sword for the full symbol-treatment.

Trust in Intrinsic Space

The air-wisdom’s specific practice-gesture is trusting the gap:

“Learning to trust intrinsic space — the space between known areas of experience — is the basis of growth. Without trusting this space we stagnate. When we go to sleep there has to be some kind of trust in waking up. Trust in the spaciousness of what we are is imperative in the process of allowing paranoia to dissolve into the emptiness from which self-accomplishing activity can arise.”

Where the air-neurotic fears gaps as sources of menace (“in the auditory world there are paranoid projections of what silence may hide”), the air-practitioner leans into gaps as the source from which wisdom-activity naturally arises. This is the air-element correlate of:

  • Earth: trusting the non-solidity of ground (recognizing insubstantiality as warmth, not hollowness)
  • Water: cutting justification (recognizing impermanence as clarity, not threat)
  • Fire: staring into desire with non-conceptual attention (recognizing isolation as uniqueness, not lack-of-connection)
  • Air: trusting intrinsic space (recognizing discontinuity as the source of action, not the threat of obliteration)

Vanishing as Occupational Hazard of Being

Ch.9’s distinctive positive-formulation of the air emptiness-quality:

“When we gain some degree of clarity through the practice of shi-ne, we start to view vanishing as an occupational hazard of being. We continually vanish and continually reappear. We are continually leaping out of sheer emptiness into the present instant.”

The discontinuity-affirmation: moments of experience do not persist through continuous-presence. They arise from emptiness, manifest, and vanish back into emptiness. Every present-moment is a fresh leap, not a continuation. This is the air-element working-out of the emptiness-quality discontinuity (see Form Qualities and Emptiness Qualities).

For the neurotic read: vanishing is terrifying; the continuous-self-maintenance operation is run to prevent it. For the wisdom read: vanishing is the condition of appearing; fresh arising requires fresh emptiness to arise from. All-accomplishing wisdom is precisely this: activity that arises fresh from emptiness moment-to-moment, rather than activity that attempts to perpetuate-itself-through-time.

All-Accomplishing ≠ Omni-Competence

A critical misreading treats all-accomplishing wisdom as “being able to do anything one wants” — the air-neurosis in its spiritualised form. Ch.9 implicitly corrects this:

  • All-accomplishing wisdom is self-accomplishing, not self-willed. The will is the activity’s own arising, not a superimposed directive.
  • All-accomplishing wisdom addresses “what needs to be pacified / enriched / magnetised / destroyed” — the needs come from the situation, not from personal preference.
  • The “we can” in the epigraph is not “we are able to” in the competence-sense but “we are the field through which” in the operational-sense.

The failure-mode: “I have all-accomplishing wisdom; therefore I should be able to fix this” — the reintroduction of the dualistic-effort apparatus. This is the fifth-degree imitating-enlightenment failure (see Imitating Enlightenment): using the wisdom-label to legitimise the very dualism the wisdom dissolves.

The Karma-Family Position

All-accomplishing wisdom is the wisdom of the Karma (Activity) buddha-family, whose buddha is Amoghasiddhi (don yod grub pa, “accomplishing the meaning”). The mudra is the boon-granting gesture; the element is air; the direction is North; the symbol is the crossed-dorje (dorje gyatram) or sword. The neurotic emotion mapped to this family in the standard scheme is jealousy; SoE Ch.9 develops this as paranoia / territorial-vigilance, revealing jealousy’s deeper structure as territorial-insecurity.

The Five-Fold Wisdom Scheme

All-accomplishing wisdom is one of the five wisdoms (ye shes lnga) in the standard Vajrayana five-fold scheme:

(All five rows now confirmed. Ch.10’s completion of Part Two installs dharmadhātu wisdom as the ground-wisdom — dharmadhātu wisdom is not a fifth wisdom alongside the other four but their dimensional ground.)

The Naivete/Cynicism Integration

All-accomplishing wisdom’s relational signature — how it shows up in interaction with others:

“As dualistic reflections of wisdom and compassion, both naivete and cynicism are actually necessary. Naivete relates to wisdom, because of its openness and lack of tension. Cynicism relates to compassion (method), because of its ability to zero in on situations and catch signs of dishonesty. Naivete when integrated with cynicism manifests openness, trust, and confidence. Cynicism when integrated with naivete manifests capacity, capability, and direct uninhibited action.”

The integration-claim:

  • Naivete (openness) + cynicism (acuity)openness, trust, confidence (the wisdom-pole’s visible manifestation)
  • Cynicism (acuity) + naivete (openness)capacity, capability, direct uninhibited action (the method-pole’s visible manifestation = all-accomplishing wisdom directly)

All-accomplishing wisdom is the name for cynicism-integrated-with-naivete: the situation-reading-faculty that is not tense/defended, and that issues in direct-uninhibited-action. See Compassion for the full compassion-as-method treatment; the Ch.9 move locates the specific register of situation-reading-acuity as belonging to the method-pole and as operative when not-distorted-by-paranoia.

Dissolution of Paranoia as Release of Dynamic Potential

Ch.9’s resolution:

“The dissolution of paranoia is a colossal relief. There are no more strategies to be worked out, there is no more suspicion of mutiny in the ranks, there is no war to wage. Once paranoia begins to dissolve there is less and less to keep under surveillance. The need to protect our experiential territory from annihilation simply evaporates into itself and the power of dynamic potential is unleashed. There is nothing to guard and no solid, permanent, separate, continuous, or defined ‘I’ to guard it anyway.”

The release-formula: all-accomplishing wisdom is not acquired; it is released once the surveillance-operation stops consuming the energy that is the wisdom. The air-neurosis’s energy is all-accomplishing wisdom running as paranoia; dissolving the paranoia releases the same energy in its undistorted mode.

Relation to Khandro and Pawo

The air-element’s khandro is the inner, spatial, feeling-quality expression of all-accomplishing wisdom; its pawo is the outer, dynamic-physical expression (“all-pervasive relentless turbulence of air”).

  • Air Pawo = the dynamic-physical all-directions-moving-force of air, as it appears in breeze, wind, hurricane, whirlwind, the whole weather-phenomenon.
  • Air Khandro = the inner spatial quality of self-accomplishing activity as felt-experience — the mode in which consciousness is always-already-accomplishing, without deliberation.

Together they constitute the full field of the green Khandro-Pawo Display (SoE Ch.9).

  • Spectrum of Ecstasy - 14 Ch.9 Green Khandro-Pawo Display — source
  • Thunderbolt Sword — iconographic symbol: lightning-as-self-accomplishing-activity
  • Dorje Trollo — crazy-wisdom awareness-being embodying all-accomplishing wisdom directly
  • Five Elements — air / green as the element the wisdom belongs to
  • Fear of Obliteration — the neurotic-engine of the same energy
  • Three Poisons — jealousy / paranoid-vigilance as the classical correspondence
  • Embracing Emotions as the Path — the methodological frame; air-column
  • Form Qualities and Emptiness Qualities — continuity/discontinuity; discontinuity is what self-accomplishing activity rests on (fresh arising from emptiness moment-to-moment)
  • Tong-pa-nyid — vibrant emptiness = pure potentiality; the chö-ku-level condition from which wisdom-activity arises
  • Compassion — the method-pole (cynicism-as-situation-acuity) that integrates with wisdom-pole openness
  • Mistrust of Existence — the general substrate; fear-of-obliteration as air-specific face
  • Hidden Agenda Criteria“nothing to guard and no solid, permanent, separate, continuous, or defined ‘I’ to guard it anyway”
  • Wisdom of Equanimity — earth-wisdom parallel (first of five)
  • Mirror-Wisdom — water-wisdom parallel (second of five)
  • Discriminating Awareness — fire-wisdom parallel (third of five)
  • Khandro, Pawo — the two polar expressions of the air-element
  • Symbol — the technical sense in which the thunderbolt sword is the visible form of self-accomplishing activity
  • Imitating Enlightenment — the failure-mode: “I have all-accomplishing wisdom therefore I should be able to fix this” reintroduces the dualistic-effort apparatus
  • Lhun-drüp — Dzogchen parallel: spontaneous self-perfectedness; all-accomplishing wisdom as its Tantric-symbolic correlate at the element-register
  • View Meditation Action — action = “the endless and spontaneous dance ignited by precise sensitivity to whatever happens”; all-accomplishing wisdom is the air-element register of this action
  • Dharmadhatu Wisdom — space-wisdom; ground-wisdom; all-accomplishing wisdom as one of the four dynamic functions of dharmadhātu
