Discriminating Awareness
Discriminating awareness (Tib. so sor rtog pa’i ye shes, Skt. pratyavekṣana-jñāna) — also named in SoE Ch.8 as the wisdom of pure appropriateness — is the fire-element wisdom in the five-fold Vajrayana scheme. It is the nondual face of the same energy whose dualistic face is obsession, grasping-desire, and random hunger for focuses of comforting proximity.
The Ch.8 Definition
“According to the dualistic vision of the fire element, experience of our spacious nature is perceived as isolation. When the texture of our experience is felt in this way, the sense of loneliness (illusory lack of connection) generates the distorted energy of obsession; and, random hunger for focuses of comforting proximity. According to the non-dual vision of the fire element, experiences of our spacious nature are discovered in their natural condition as the energy of discriminating awareness — the wisdom of pure appropriateness.”
The wisdom and the neurosis are the same energy — our spacious nature — read through two opposite filters:

The Identity with Compassion — Trungpa’s Gloss
Ch.8 footnote 1 makes the identity explicit:
“Compassion: the aspect of enlightenment described by Rig’dzin Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche as ‘the passion beyond passion’; or ‘non-dual passion’. In the view of Tantra, compassion cannot be actualised if passion is negated. Passion, together with all forms of communicative appreciation, are aspects of compassion.”
Discriminating awareness IS compassion. The fire-wisdom is not “compassion-instead-of-passion” but “passion beyond passion” — passion undistorted, which IS compassion’s operational mode.
Critical corollary: “compassion cannot be actualised if passion is negated.” The spiritual-bypassing move of suppressing passion blocks compassion; passion’s energy is the material out of which compassion operates. See Compassion.
Operational Signature
Ch.8 specifies discriminating-awareness operationally:
“Ceasing to operate from the centralised desire-fulfilment machine of duality, makes it feasible to extend infinitely to all beings. We have immediate awareness of exactly what is needed, and where. When people approach with their problems, we do not feel the need to manipulate the situation to satisfy our need to feel wanted. We have no need to make people feel dependent; but rather, we can facilitate their growth or healing in a skilful way that is not ‘sticky’ with our thirst for gratitude or accomplishment.”
Four operational features:
- Not-operating-from-the-desire-fulfilment-machine — the absence of the centralised self-reference apparatus.
- Infinite extension to all beings — the same wisdom extends without differentiation-by-preference.
- Immediate awareness of exactly-what-is-needed-and-where — accurate perception unclouded by one’s own needs.
- Non-sticky facilitation — help leaves no residue (gratitude, dependency, acknowledgment-debt).
The Non-Sticky Diagnostic
Stickiness — Ch.8’s distinctive negative-mode:
“…we can facilitate their growth or healing in a skilful way that is not ‘sticky’ with our thirst for gratitude or accomplishment. We neither give too little, nor do we give too much; because we are not governed by our fears and anxieties.”
Sticky help — the fire-neurotic’s help-giving carries acknowledgment-requirement, ongoing-connection-demand, self-image-boosting-residue.
Non-sticky help (discriminating-awareness) — the help is given, the situation moves on, the helper retains no residue, the helped retains no obligation. This corresponds to the lotus’s growing-pure-through-sludge (Pema): the help-function operates through specific conditions but is not contaminated by them.
Active-Compassion vs Idiot Compassion
Ch.8 names the critical failure-mode:
“There is a distinct difference between the real compassion of pure appropriateness and the ‘idiot compassion’ that helps people to vegetate in long-term self-indulgence. It is ‘idiot compassion’ to assist others in remaining incapable — purely because that is what they wish to do.”
The distinction:
- Active-compassion / pure appropriateness — gives what is actually needed; helps the person grow; non-sticky; governed by accurate perception.
- Idiot compassion — gives what is wished for; keeps the person dependent; sticky; governed by the helper’s own needs (feel-wanted, avoid-disappointing, maintain-self-image-as-helpful).

The Spontaneous Share-Impulse
Ch.8’s sunset-vignette shows discriminating-awareness in operation at the non-dramatic level:
“The wish to share the delightful efflorescence of this scene with others is spontaneous and unfabricated. The thought of wanting to witness this brilliant display on our own simply does not arise. The performance is far too lyrically generous, to engender the need for ownership. It is too expansive to own — it is something we naturally wish to share. It is appropriate that there should be a full house for this performance.”
The signature: spontaneous + unfabricated. The share-impulse is not cultivated; it arises as a natural reflex of the wisdom-mode’s operational inability-to-own-the-expansive.
“Even if there is no one there to share this fabulous spectacle — feelings of warmth and good heart toward others extend as a natural reflex.”
Even in solitude, the share-impulse is active — toward others even when no others are present. This is discriminating-awareness’s infinite extension in non-dramatic form: warmth-and-good-heart as the natural mode of perception itself once the isolation-grasp is not running.
The Desireless-Desire of Compassion
Ch.8’s compressed formula:
“There is no cure apart from staring into desire with non-conceptual attention. This liberates the boundless energy of desire into the desireless-desire of compassion.”
“Desireless-desire” — the fire-specific coinage for discriminating-awareness’s operational mode. Desire without the desire-for-something; energy of wanting without the wanted-as-reference-point. This parallels Trungpa’s “passion beyond passion” — the same structural move at a different lexical register.
Practice-significance:
- Not suppression of desire — suppression blocks compassion (footnote 1).
- Not fulfilment of desire — fulfilment is the fire-neurosis’s self-defeating project.
- Not redirection of desire — desire toward-a-better-object is still desire in dualistic mode.
- Staring into desire with non-conceptual attention — the practice; the desire transforms itself without the practitioner’s doing-something-to-it.
Pura Appropriateness — The Phrase
“Pure appropriateness” as Ch.8’s name for the wisdom deserves unpacking:
- Pure — not mixed with contaminating operations (self-image-defence, gratitude-seeking, sticky-residue). The word echoes pema’s pristine petals.
- Appropriateness — exactly-what-fits-this-moment. Not generic kindness, not universal-benevolence, not abstract-wisdom. Specific wisdom tuned to this situation.
The two together: the wisdom is pure in its operation and appropriate in its specificity. The fire-wisdom does not issue general-benevolence; it responds precisely to what is here, because precise discrimination is its operational mode.
Compare with mirror-wisdom (Ch.7): “reflects everything equally, accurately, and without judgement.” Both wisdoms are accurate; mirror-wisdom emphasises reflection-without-distortion while discriminating-awareness emphasises appropriateness-of-response. The two are structurally parallel; fire’s wisdom is mirror-wisdom in its active-appropriate-response mode.
The Precision Image — Oxyacetylene and Laser
Ch.8’s symbol for discriminating-awareness’s precision:
“The liberated field of energy of the fire element displays the discriminative quality of fire. This can be seen in terms of how fire helps us in specific ways. The oxyacetylene torches of those who work with precious metals enable them to direct fine needles of flame to the exact point required. In medicine, laser beams are used in micro-surgery to achieve unprecedented precision in the art of healing.”
Fire refined: the oxyacetylene torch and the medical laser are fire — but fire refined to maximum precision. They are the same element as the obsessive hunger, in wisdom-form. The “fine needles of flame” directed to the “exact point required” is the element’s wisdom-operation-mode.
The Loneliness / Aloneness Shift
The discovery-move Ch.8 identifies:
“Once we have some recognition of intrinsic space, a great discovery can be made — loneliness is actually aloneness or uniqueness. There is a positive sense in which aloneness is an uninhibited, unattached frame of non-reference.”
The word-shift is the wisdom-shift: the same experiential content (being-alone) is either loneliness (dualistic) or aloneness-uniqueness (nondual). The content doesn’t change; the filtering-operation changes. This is the embracing-emotions-as-path structure at the fire-specific moment.
The Coital-Union Formula
Ch.8’s most compressed statement of the wisdom:
“We can simply experience the coital quality of intrinsic seduction as the fabric of reality. We can liberate desire to accommodate the desires of everyone and everything everywhere.”
The shift from individuated-grasping to universal-accommodation: the same energy that previously wanted-specific-things is liberated to accommodate all desires everywhere. This is fire-wisdom’s scope — not narrowed attention on one object but expanded accommodation of the entire field.
“We are already in coital union with every nuance of phenomenal reality that touches the spheres of our senses. We realise that we already possess everything simply through being sentient.”
“We already possess everything simply through being sentient” — the fire-wisdom’s version of the Ch.6 “with the discovery of intrinsic space we find we really do have all that we need.” For fire, the possession-realization is through sentience itself, which already is in intimate union with phenomena.
Real Frivolity — The Practice-Gesture
Ch.8’s practice-instruction for cultivating the wisdom-mode:
“The atmosphere is one of joyous frivolity and lightness. Cultivating real frivolity means abandoning the habit of taking one’s ‘self’ so seriously. Cutting through seriousness enables us to feel the sunshine. It enables us to climb out of the vast vat of porridge built of self-righteousness and sanctimonious attachment to a constipated sobriety.”
“Real frivolity” — not idiotic-lightness, not dismissive-dismissal, but the unseriousness that comes from seeing through the self-seriousness-project. The wisdom’s felt-texture is light — catkins, bluebells, young creatures at play.
The porridge-imagery: “self-righteousness and sanctimonious attachment to a constipated sobriety” — the failure-mode of spiritual-seriousness-as-pride is named in explicitly dismissive language. Spiritual seriousness is a specific form of earth-neurosis dressed up (entitlement-to-gravitas).
The Five-Fold Wisdom Scheme
Discriminating-awareness is one of the five wisdoms (ye shes lnga):

Relation to Khandro and Pawo
The fire-element’s khandro is the inner, spatial, feeling-quality expression of discriminating-awareness — the sky-of-fire as the dimension in which pure-appropriateness operates. Its pawo is the outer, dynamic-physical expression — “bright lascivious incendiary hunger of fire” in its wisdom-form (warming, illuminating, sustaining).
